Wasps are fierce defenders of their nests, using painful stings to
ward off intruders. They come in a wide range of shapes and colors and
differ from bees in their smooth bodies. Wasps measure from 1/2 to 3/4
inch long and are predators who seek out and scavenge for protein to
eat such as spiders, insects and small animals.
Some species of Wasps are solitary, while others will grow a colony
numbering in the thousands. A nest is started with one queen who lays
the eggs for the entire colony. If the queen dies, a worker bee can
assume the egg laying role until an new queen is produced.

Almost every pest insect species has at least one wasp
species that preys upon it, making wasps critically important in natural
control of their numbers, or natural biocontrol. Parasitic wasps are
increasingly used in agricultural pest control as they prey mostly
