Are Spiders a Problem?
Does it seem like spiders are just about everywhere? Believe it or not, this is a fairly normal part of home ownership. It’s virtually impossible to eliminate the presence of spiders entirely from your home, as they’ll find their way in through things like chimneys, plumbing lines, attic ventilation, and other things that need to remain free and open in order to work properly. And the presence of a few spiders isn’t necessarily a sign of a problem or even a bad thing in and of itself.
Spiders are actually extremely beneficial for controlling the population of other bugs such as flies, bees, silverfish, and much more. Of the more than 500 species of spider found natively throughout northern Oregon and southern Washington, only one is truly venomous to humans: the Black Widow. The remaining species don’t use humans to sustain themselves beyond finding shelter in their home or using the structure to spin a web and catch their prey.
Some other spiders commonly found in our area include:
- Grass spiders
- Wolf spiders
- The cellar spider
- Crab spiders
- Flower spiders
- The false black widow
- The folding trapdoor spider
- Jumping spiders
- Zebra spiders
- The writing spider
However, if you’re noticing a fairly large number of spiders throughout your home, we do have options available that can help with your infestation. We approach spider infestations the same way we approach any other pest problem: through a unique and customized approach that tracks down the root source of the problem, gets rid of it, and then eliminates the infestation in a way that prioritizes the safety of your family, pets, and children.
Dealing with spiders can be stressful, scary, and annoying, especially if you find you’re constantly having to squish ones you spot sitting on your walls or crawling across the floor. Our team is highly-experienced in developing comprehensive solutions that can give you the peace of mind of knowing the problem is gone for good, using thorough inspection and environmental changes, and only resorting to pesticides when absolutely needed.
What Attracts Spiders?
Spiders are attracted to a variety of things, the most common of which is a constant food supply. Since spiders mainly feast on other insects, they go in search of an area that has an abundance. If your home hosts a large population of insects, you can expect that spiders will find their way in. Other factors that attract spiders include warmth, water, hidden spaces, and vegetation. While most spiders tend to stay hidden from humans, some can become a nuisance as they find shelter in your home's hidden areas.
